第2回は2014年度4月からクリスマス時期までの活動を振り返って綴られています。

VP Diary

Hello Everybody
This is a new “VP Diary”, just in time for Christmas and the New Year. Perhaps some of you are already busy preparing Christmas cards or New Year cards to send to your families and friends. I myself shall not send any New Year cards this time, because my father passed away this year, and so, in accordance with the Japanese custom, I must wait one year. However, I will still send some Christmas cards to my family and friends in England and other countries, because we have no custom of not sending them in a year of bereavement. Indeed, I know that some of my friends who know about my bereavement will probably send brighter, more colourful cards than usual, to cheer me up. There are many cultural differences in those routine aspects of our lives that we believe are “atarimae”, but they are not.

The 2014 academic year has been a busy one. Here is a summary of a few of my activities:
* April:Get to know new Deans; participate in preparing an agreement on cooperation with Shotoku Schools
* April-July:Attend President’s freshman lunches; continue making new relationships with overseas universities
* May:Meet students from Texas A&M University who will act as English-teaching interns; recruit participants for the International Linguistics Olympiad in Beijing in July
* June:Attend grand graduation ceremony at Temple University, Tokyo campus; attend International Association of University Presidents conference in Yokohama; observe several classes in Faculties of Social Studies and Foreign Studies
* July:Attend Global conference at Ochanomizu University; dispatch team to the International Linguistics Olympiad in Beijing
* August:Participate in Open Campuses; visit NZ and Australia to discuss overseas partnerships with six universities
* September:Present Global Symposium at Mitaka Campus
* October:Attend special event for British Columbia universities and colleges at the Canadian Embassy
* November:Welcome Director of UN Information Centre to speak to over 300 students at Hachioji Campus; attend discussion meeting on UN Academic Impact at UN University, Tokyo; attend Global conferences held by Tokyo Metropolitan University, Hitotsubashi University, and the Nikkei Shinbun
* December:Participate in recruitment event for potential employers at Keio Plaza Hotel; attend Global conference at Sophia University; attend large Overseas Study Fair at Kwansei Gakuin University
* September-December:receive guests from US, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Ireland etc.; participate in setting up new agreements with local high schools; sign up to Yomiuri Education Network; speed up discussions of new curriculum, entrance exams, etc. for 2016
