As I organize my office for the soon imminent forced retirement – depressed by the wasteful disposal of interesting academic and popular books, videos and CDs; joyed by reminiscing on the numerous souvenir knickknacks and trinkets bought and received from an array of universities visited, conferences attended and trainings conducted in different countries; bewildered by the reams of paper produced from countless meetings, promotional brochures, research data, and student assessment – I am forced to ruminate on what was, could have been, and what has become.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First and foremost: higher education needs to change if it is to remain relevant, especially with the arrival of a plethora of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, bots, agents and API that are now ubiquitous and challenge practices and pedagogy. Universities, once the gatekeepers to knowledge, both literally and figuratively, are finding that theory and knowledge alone are no longer sufficient, even though they remain critically necessary. Students, staff and faculty can no loner rest on the laurels of past practice and pedagogy if they expect to provide the societies with labor – that is, citizens – prepared for 2030 and beyond. Staff can already by replaced – or at very least reduced – by AI agents, bots and API. Creating a curriculum? AI can produce a first draft more efficiently. Similarly, for a timetable. Minutes of meetings? Ask an AI API. Student enquiries? Talk to LLM bots. Faculty? Professors that preach and speak for 90 minutes are obsolete – for starters, it is waste of a professor’s knowledge and skill-set. If we should have learnt anything from Covid19 constraints, it is that other practices, pathways and possibilities exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Universities and specialty colleges (senmon gakko<\/em>) have convinced the market that they are necessary in the process of providing skilled and knowledgeable labor for organizations. (The latter are perhaps more relevant than the former.) The belief is that graduates are better equipped to offer add-on benefits to organizations; that is, help them make a profit. In Japan, this has at times been mythical vis-\u00e0-vis white-collar administration workers – those so-called salarymen<\/em>. Moreover, the return-on-investment (ROI) for a higher education diploma in Japan is dubious, especially for women who are disadvantaged from the get-go, and face the distinct possibility that they will need to leave full-time employment long before they ‘pay off’ their investment for a higher education diploma if they choose to have a family. Simply, salaries are not commensurate to the diploma. Even ignoring these traditional modus operandi, the arrival of AI and associated tools demands we adapt to prepare graduates for the possible futures that await them – even if we in the academy foolishly believe AI won’t affect us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No course of study can claim to be isolated or protected from AI’s ubiquity. Language and linguistics? The LLMs and translator software were rapidly pounced upon by students and utilized in their studies. Law? All over the world, with the possible exception of the United States that seeks to protect their creative capital, governments are rushing to make legal statutes to tame the onslaught. Courts are hearing cases and are making precedent law. Family law? What does it mean to be married or in a relationship as more and more people hitch themselves to bots? Economics? Banking? AI tools are far outperforming humans and finding new possibilities. IR and politics? No escape. Governments are embracing the technologies to control populations, streamline information, and capitalize on the financial gains to be made. And that is over and above the not-so-discussed use of AI weaponry. Medicine? AI has already made incredible discoveries and has shown to have positive impacts when it is included as a supplemental instrument in the medical toolbox. Higher education is remiss if it does not incorporate both the skill and understanding of these technological challenges into every course. Every course of study is exposed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Workforce redundancy will follow if reskilling or upskilling is ignored – unless someone realizes robots and AI do not pay taxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In higher education, institutions are falling (literally and figuratively) into professional or faculty development (PD\/FD) lectures. Although FD is necessary, and it has always been a part of the philosophy in a sabbatical or research leave abroad, they are provided ad hoc<\/em> and without any semblance of learning, development or demonstrable ROI. On the whole, PD simply checks boxes in a Key Point Indicator (KPI) matrix that would be shown to be spurious if held to account by the rigor of research. Moreover, where is staff development (SD)? How are employees being futureproofed against the threats? How are they being prepared to build and secure the opportunities that exist?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let’s call this upskilling and reskilling, retraining and an awakening. I also teach International Relations, and we speak of hard power, soft power and smart power, but many overlook the need for fast power, which is the ability to rapidly adapt to the challenges and create opportunities. Japan falters with this power. Higher education perhaps even more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I often find these discussions both amusing and depressing at the same time. I am conflicted that the so-called intelligentsia<\/em> are the constraints to capitalizing on the opportunities, and that folks much younger than me are so unaware of the challenges and threats, or that my skills are more adept, or that I have a greater desire and willingness to learn when and where possible – and I am considered aged, a chronological number that is a left-over social construct which has failed to keep pace of the scientific and medical breakthroughs we humans have achieved and should be proud of. We speak of aging societies and not longevity societies. In other words, we see aging as a negative, a burden, a constraint, and an economic anchor. Longevity realizes the opportunities by updating policies to the data and scientific truths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kyorin University’s Faculty of Social Science has begun to address these challenges. The new curriculum adopts the strengths of the University – its responsibility to the community and to the student – with the realities that the Social Sciences cannot be understood in a vacuum, as contemporary society can no longer be predicated on past practices and understanding. DDP, CBL and GCP blend with inter-disciplinary seminars and specialized courses to both inform and develop practical understanding for the students’ futures. Seminars, focused on a specialized discipline, encourage students to create a new fusion of possibilities, blending the advances in technology with the theories and laws of their study. Of course, it still requires the students to do their part as learning does not happen with the professor: it happens in the learner. In fact, the student should not wait for the professor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is an equalization available across higher education. Equally, there will be a further widening between institutions for those who do not accept that change is required. Some will fall. Some will lead. Risk is required. The futures are unknown. But, we can plan. If we don’t, those futures will be made for us. The Faculty of Social Science has set out on creating a future adventure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The change has been too slow for me. I will be watching as a spectator in the bleachers for the retired. Perhaps I will be represented by my bot on those days I am too busy learning something new. Until then, no AI can help me sort my office or the memories I want to keep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
