My primary research interests are concerned with effective, efficient, and enjoyable avenues of language acquisition. In particular, I am interested in extensive reading and listening, the use of educational technology, and usage-based teaching methodologies.
My interest in language acquisition mainly arose from my own learning experiences with a variety of languages, educational contexts, methodologies, and subsequent success rates.
I feel students in foreign language contexts such as Japan greatly benefit from large amounts of level-appropriate, interesting input, as well as opportunities to use what they have learned during authentic communication, rather than relying solely on a traditional grammar-based syllabus. I am hopeful that more students in Japan can benefit from these well-established and enjoyable methods of learning English so that they can experience meaningful interaction with people from all over the world.
The process of learning another language of course will give you the ability to communicate and learn from even more people around the world. Language learning has various cognitive benefits as well, such as enhanced critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, and improved memory. Perhaps most importantly in this increasingly divided world, however, is the deeper understanding of other cultures and ways of life necessary for peace in the world.
