Albert Sydney Hornby 1898-1978
A.S. Hornby probably sold more copies of his published works than any Englishman who has lived in Japan. Oxford University Press claims, ‘1.5 copies of the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary is [sic] sold every minute.’　 Most students of English as a foreign language do not know about its roots in Japan; even its Japanese users may not be aware of its origins. Hornby’s dictionary was entitled the Idiomatic and Syntactic English Dictionary (ISED) on first publication in Tokyo in 1942, and it broke new ground as a work designed for EFL students.
Hornby lived and worked in Japan from 1924 until the outbreak of war with Japan. His first posting as a fresh graduate of UCL was to Oita Higher Commercial School, where he recognized the need for less literature and more practical English to be taught to his students. He moved after ten years to Tokyo to work more closely with H.E. Palmer at the Institute for Research in Language Teaching (IRET) and later take over his work after Palmer left.

This presentation concentrated on his life and work in Oita and Tokyo, but also looked at his earlier life and his achievements after leaving Japan.

日本在住経験のあるイギリス人の中で、誰よりも多くの出版物が販売されたのはきっとA.S.ホーンビーでしょう。オックスフォード大学出版部によると、Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (OALD)が１分に1.5冊販売されているとの事です。外国語としての英語学習者はほぼ全員その辞書が日本で生まれた事を知らないでしょう。日本で使用している人たちさえ知らないかもしれません。東京で1942年に出版された初版Idiomatic and Syntactic English Dictionary (ISED) は英語学習者にとって開拓的なものでした。
ホーンビーは1924年から日本が第二次大戦に参戦するまで日本で働いていました。ロンドン大学卒業後すぐに就任した大分高等商業学校では、文学的な内容を減らした、より実用的な英語教育の必要性を実感しました。10年後「英語教授研究所」(IRET)でH.E.パーマーとより密接に協力するため東京に移転し、パーマーの帰国後はその仕事を受け継ぎました。

今回の発表では主に大分と東京の時代を中心に、若い頃および日本を去った後の業績についても語りました。
