KWC English Writing Workshop
An introduction to basic academic writing
The three workshops will be an introduction to writing a paragraph. The workshops will cover:
Workshop 1 - Wednesday June 14th
The structure of a paragraph:
Generating ideas for writing a paragraph
Six students came for the workshop today. One from Foreign Studies (1st Year) and five from Social Sciences (2nd Year). The workshop started with an introduction of the course (five workshops) and then the question: What is academic writing? It was explained that academic writing differs from other types of writing in several ways: purpose, audience, evidence, style and the process of writing. The workshop continued by identifying sections of a paragraph, such as the: topic sentence, supporting sentences and concluding sentence, as well as the controlling idea. The workshop concluded by studying ‘brainstorming’ and the different forms it can take, for example: listing, mind mapping and free writing. The students enjoyed the workshop and found it a valuable resource to help them in their writing here at Kyorin University.
