I visited Kanagawa-Sogo High School on Friday, July 14th and joined 90 minute lesson with Sugawara-Sensei. Five students and teacher from Garfield High School in Seattle also participated in the lesson as they were on an intercultural exchange. The focus of the lesson was ‘Japan’s Problem with Race’. It was great to see a presentation on the students’ hometown of Seattle. The Kanagawa-Sogo students are in a homestay program and their English is advanced level; some of them native-level – they had no communication problems and were able to grasp a difficult topic and fully express their opinions. The students were introduced to the Japanglish of ‘hafu’, although it was pointed out that ‘duberu’ (double) might be more appropriate. The purpose of the lesson was to raise awareness of ‘Japan’s Problem with Race’ which was extremely important as some of the students themselves had difficulties with their own situations. This was a great opportunity to find out how the KWC could help and support the students of Kanagawa-Sogo with their English and in particular their writing skill. It would be great to collaborate with them in the future.
