On Friday, 13th July, two workshops were conducted each lasting 90 minutes each. The first class (2nd period) had 48 students and the second class (3rd period) has 39 students. In total 87 students.
The theme of the workshop was ‘Summer Writing’. First, an introduction to the Kyorin Writing Center (KWC) was presented. Then, a lead-in through a ‘chalkboard vocabulary race’ was utilized to build scaffolding and interest in the topic.
Next, summer discussion questions (using Natural English: openers, reactions, details, follow-up questions, and closers) were employed to facilitate deeper understanding. For the main task, the students wrote about their plans for the summer. An example was given (with students asked to volunteer to read). The students rounded off the activity by reading their compositions to each other and then asking follow-up questions.
The lesson wrapped up with a summer sentence structure game. The workshops were thoroughly enjoyable with an appropriate topic (summer) and a positive class atmosphere.
