Junten High School 1 Nov., 2018 P. Snowden

Kyorin University’s contribution to Junten High School’s Global Week on Thursday, 1. November took the form of a presentation by Paul Snowden on “Gulliver in Japan”. As we can see from the title of the book, written in 1726, Jonathan Swift’s “Gulliver’s Travels”, Gulliver made more than one journey. In fact, he made four journeys to mysterious, fictional places: the first to a country of tiny people, the second to a country of giants, etc. Actually, on his third journey he visited several places, which were all fictional except one: Japan.

The presentation covered the background to all of Gulliver’s journeys, but concentrated on his experience in Japan. Handouts included: photocopies of (1) the few pages in the novel that refer (a) to Gulliver’s encounter with a Japanese pirate captain, who proved to be more humane that one Dutch pirate, and (b) Gulliver’s short stay in Japan itself, and (2) the maps in the original work that place Swift’s mythical countries in genuine locations.

Participants included (1) a dozen high-school students, including four from other schools, and a German girl and a Finnish girl currently visiting Junten, and (2) four Junten teachers: two from America, one from Australia, and one Japanese teacher of English in charge.

Attention was paid to how accurately Gulliver describes Japan, and how good his knowledge could be considered to be in the light of the fact that Japan at that time was closed to almost all outsiders. Similar discussion was made of the map of the third journey, with several fictitious countries located near to “Japon”, which includes some recognizable places such as Iedo, Osacca, Surungo, Tanaxima, etc., as well as other unrecognizable ones.
The full ninety minutes were successfully completed mostly in English, with confident expression by several of the participants.
