Junten High School Global Week Lecture
Malcolm H. Field

The title – or should that be question? - of the lecture was “Is technology killing (traditional) culture?”. Thirteen active students and four teachers attended the interactive lecture. Several of the students were visiting students from abroad, many were returnees, and a few were there to use their English (great stuff!).

The objective of the lecture was not for me to provide a definitive answer to the question, but to provide different perspectives and understanding about the very broad and general ideas, such as culture, technology, killing and even the future. Students were encouraged to think about each idea as each was introduced in the lecture. At the end, after a solid 85 minutes of work, the students were asked if their original ideas and opinions had changed.

This Global Week is a great event for Japanese high school students. I am pleased that Kyorin University can be involved at some level as Kyorin also boasts of several global programs. It was good to watch young students actively considering ideas that were perhaps new to their current heuristics.
