The Kyorin summer English Camp was successfully held at Waku Waku Village in Takao from Sunday, August 6th to Tuesday, August 8th. Eight high school students and 17 university students attended. On Sunday afternoon all the students were split into groups and participated in a memory game to learn each other’s names and share personal information. This was followed by another activity where they had to tell truths and a lie about themselves. These activities were designed for the students to become familiar with each other whilst speaking in English. The next lesson was talking about holidays and making postcards. The evening session was focused on the ‘News Presentation’ which was the main task during the camp. The students had to make a group presentation of fake news. The news was supposed to be crazy and strange. This encouraged the students to really use their imaginations and be creative. Included in the presentation were two or three news headlines and one or two sport headlines followed by the weather. After writing their scripts the students made a poster.

On Monday morning the students continued working on their scripts for the News Presentation. At lunch the students and teachers had a BBQ in the outdoor area, which involved chopping wood and then making a fire. The students thoroughly enjoyed the preparation process and then of course the food. Later in the afternoon and in the evening session the students continued working on their presentation. By the end of the evening at 9pm the students had finished their scripts and posters.

On the last day after breakfast the students practiced for the News Presentation individually and together in groups. Help was given on delivery skills, such as pronunciation, intonation, fluency and transitioning. The students were encouraged to use eye contact and use gestures. After the practice the students presented their news and all groups did an excellent job. The combination of high school students and university students was a winner with all groups working hard to complete their tasks. We successfully wrapped up and then finished the camp around 1pm.
