専門分野（学部）	選択体系機能言語学理論(SFL)を用いた研究 SFL理論では、言葉は意味を成す為の道具であり、使用される文化的価値観に基づいた状況の中、ある目的を達成する為に使われると考えられます。つまり言葉の中で最も重要なのが意味であり、具体的な意味はある状況的要素(話題、対人関係、言語形態(話し言葉、書き言葉、Eメールなど))の下、無限に近い選択肢の中から選ばれることによって成されます。このような理論を応用し以下のような研究をしています。 Discourse Analysis: 会話を含め、自然な話し言葉がどのように段落化されるかについて研究してます。ここ数年は、カナダ・アメリカ・ノルウェーの研究者と共に、人と類人猿(ボノボ)のコミュニケーションについても分析してます。最近ではボノボの発声を分析し、formantsが無いとも言われる彼らの発声音が、なぜ人間によって言葉として理解されるのかを研究しています。日本語への応用: SFLは、今まで英語についての研究が中心でした。これから共同研究として、日本語についてもSFLの枠組みで分析していく予定です。英語教育: SFLの観点から日本の英語教育を見ると、さまざまな問題点を挙げることが出来ます。中学、高校で学ぶ単語や表現を知っていれば、受験ばかりではなくコミュニケーションにも十分使えるはずなのに、なぜ日本人は使えない人が多いのでしょう。これに対する解決法は一つではないでしょうし、他国で効果のある教授法が、必ずしも日本でも通用するとは限りません。この分野には“the best approach”というものはありませんので、一生“better approaches”を追求していきたいです。
